Under months-long lockdowns, women across 37 countries unable to access sexual and reproductive healthcare, report says. Millions of women and girls globally have lost access to contraceptives and abortion services because of the coronavirus pandemic, as they bear the brunt of the global calamity, warned an international aid group. Across 37 countries, nearly two million fewer women received such services between January and June than in the same period last year, Marie Stopes International said in a new report on Wednesday. India, with its abrupt months-long lockdown, has been hit especially hard, with 1.3 million women affected.  The organisation expects an additional 900,000 unintended pregnancies worldwide as a result, along with an additional 1.5 million unsafe abortions and an additional more than 3,000 maternal deaths. Mali crisis: From disputed election to president's resignation

Image
A timeline of how Mali's months-long political crisis culminated in President Keita's resignation following a coup For months, Mali has been mired in an escalating political crisis marked by large anti-government rallies and failed mediation attempts by regional leaders wary of further instability in the country. Political tension has been simmering following the re-election of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in 2018, in a poll that opposition parties said was marred by irregularities. Friction rose earlier this year after a dispute over the results of a parliamentary election prompted tens of thousands to take to the streets to demand Keita's resignation. The demonstrators accused Keita of failing to fix the country's dire economic situation and contain a years-long armed campaign by various groups that has killed thousands and rendered vast swaths of Mali ungovernable. The tension culminated on Tuesday when mutinying soldiers detained Keita, Prime Minister Boubou Cis

South Africa To Resume Alcohol and Cigarette Sales

South Africa's Ramaphosa announces easing of coronavirus lockdown Africa's hardest-hit country to permit sale of alcohol and tobacco as well as reopening of restaurants and taverns. South Africa imposed in March one of the strictest lockdowns in the world as part of efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus. Alcohol sales were prohibited to ease pressure on hospitals, allowing doctors in emergency wards to focus on COVID-19 rather than road accidents and other booze-related injuries. Tobacco products were restricted because of the health impacts of smoking as well as the risk of contamination between people sharing cigarettes. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that stringent coronavirus regulations would be eased as of Monday as the country's infection rate falls. In a televised address on Saturday, Ramaphosa said the government would end a ban on alcohol and tobacco sales, allow restaurants and taverns to return to normal business - subject to strict

FAKE: Covid-19 trackers have NOT been secretly added to iPhone and Android handsets

Image
A misleading claim widely shared on social media suggests "Covid-19 trackers" were covertly added to iPhone and Android handsets during unspecified "phone disruptions" in June. A  post  by British-Ghanaian actress Adjoa Andoh containing the claim, was retweeted more than 1,000 times, with the same wording also appearing in many other social media posts. It is true that a Covid-19 tracing software tool has appeared in the settings of both Android phones and iPhones as part of an update of their operating systems. But the "exposure notification" tool is switched off by default, and is not a tracing app itself. It enables an app to run in the background while still using Bluetooth. This lets the app measure the distance between two handsets - and then alert the phone owner if someone near them later tests positive for Covid-19. The update has caused some confusion, with people querying the new addition to their handsets on social media. "This is not a ne

Madagascar President's Herbal Tonic Fails to Halt Covid-19 Spike

Cases have quadrupled in the past month in the Indian Ocean island, with more than 13,000 infections and 162 deaths from coronavirus, which has spread to all but one of its 22 regions. Despite the spike, President Andry Rajoelina stands by the herbal concoction called Covid-Organics, which was launched to great fanfare in April. It is produced by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research from the artemisia plant - the source of an ingredient used in a malaria treatment - and other Malagasy plants. The drink has been marketed as a prevention and remedy - and for the last four months been offered to children at school. Earlier in the month the president was out again distributing the tonic, along with essentials such as rice, oil, su
