R. Kelly's appeal to be released on bail ahead of his trial was denied by an appeals court Tuesday. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals' decision said prosecutors presented "clear and convincing evidence" that Kelly presents a potential danger to the community and he is a flight risk. R. Kelly's attorneys asked for his release from federal custody before the panel of three judges Friday morning, arguing that the singer has been  unable to prepare for his upcoming trial for nearly six months. The singer has not seen his attorneys in person since March, when prisons went into lockdown, cutting off in-person legal visits due to coronavirus concerns. His trial was  scheduled to begin at the end of September  in federal court in Brooklyn, but was delayed in part due to the pandemic. R. The apparent sexually explicit "like" was first identified by a London-based human rights campaigner on Wednesday.   It quickly set off a storm online as Twitter users speculated about whether ambassador Liu Xiaoming's account had been hacked. The account also appeared to "like" at least one other post which was critical of the ruling Chinese Communist Party. It is not clear how long the apparent "likes" remained active, or when they first appeared. A "like" on Twitter does not necessarily mean that the user is endorsing the content; "likes" are often used as bookmarks. All of the "liked" tweets on the account have now been rem...

Image
The Nations League is back: Here’s how UEFA’s latest international tournament works UEFA’s newest international football tournament is back for only the second time since it launched in 2018. The tournament largely replaced the international friendly matches, which were previously a fixture of the football calendar. But the tournament does carry some other significance: the 2018/19 iteration gave four teams the chance to qualify for Euro 2020, and the 2020-2021 fixtures provide the chance for two teams to enter play-offs for the next World Cup. What is the format? The UEFA Nations League consists initially of a league phase, with four leagues involved. Within three leagues there are four groups of four teams. The fourth league consists of two groups, one of which contains three teams, not four. Therefore a total of 55 teams will take part. Each team plays the others in their group home and away. The four group winners of League A - a league made up of the current highest ranking ...

Manchester City have confirmed two of its players have tested positive for COVID-19, less than a week before the start of the new Premier League season. In a statement on its website, last year’s league runners up said Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte were “observing a period of self-isolation” after testing positive. Neither of the players are displaying symptoms, the statement continued. Manchester City’s opening game against Wolves is on 21 September, meaning the two players could be available for selection. The Premier League is carrying out thousands of tests each mon...

At least 10 people have been killed in a roadside bomb attack in the Afghan capital Kabul that targeted the first vice president, Amrullah Saleh. Mr Saleh, a former head of the Afghan intelligence services, escaped with slight burns on his face and hand. The bombing came as Afghan officials and the Taliban prepared to begin their first formal talks. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a tweet that the militant group was not responsible for the blast. Footage filmed shortly after the explosion showed a large plume of black smoke rising from the scene. Tareq Arain, a spokesman for Afghanistan's interior ministry, said the roadside bomb targeted Mr Saleh's convoy as the official travelled to work. Mr Arain said 10 civilians who worked in the area were killed and 15 people, including one of Mr Saleh's bodyguards, were wounded. A witness to the explosion said he was driving past the location on the way to a clinic when the bomb detonated. "I lost one of my brothers...
